ECO PSE is an organisation formed in June 1993 representing the main French expanded polystyrene (EPS) manufacturers to promote knowledge and awareness of their products during their entire life cycle. With this in mind, ECO PSE has given itself the twin mission of promoting the material's properties and its recycling opportunities for users and consumers. Over a third of EPS packaging generated by industrial and commercial use is now recycled (the final consumer does not sort EPS packaging at home). However, when packaging is at its peak period, the White Christmas Operation® encourages 20,000 pupils every year to actively participate in recycling the EPS which had packaged many of their presents. In addition, the White Magic Box®, created in 2005 by ECO PSE (and already associated with "Sustainable Development Week" and "Year of Physics") allows pupils to become scientific researchers themselves through making, testing and recycling their own EPS packaging pieces. These experiments form part of special courses concerned with environmental education which is now part of school programmes.
